José de Diego (1866-1921), nació en Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Recibió su educación primaria en Puerto Rico y luego se midó a España donde se graduó de la Universidad Politécnica de Logroño. Luego de varios años regresó a España y estudió leyes en la Ciudad de Barcelona. Luego al recibir su grado continuó sus estudios hasta graduarse con doctorado en leyes en 1892. Entonces regresó a Puerto Rico por un problema de salud.
Para el año 1916 se le amputó la pierna derecha debido a una infección. Murió en la ciudad de Nueva York el 17 de julio de 1921 mientras recitaba uno de los poemas. Sus restos yacen en el Cementerio Antiguo de San Juan.
En memoria de José de Diego se han nombrado escuelas, avenidas y autopistas en Puerto Rico.
También han nombrado escuelas en Brooklyn, Nueva York y Miami.
